Hair Concerns - Greasy Roots

Greasy roots are a common yet bothersome issue for many people, often resulting in hair that lacks life and is limp. By being able to understand what is causing this problem and creating an effective routine can make all the difference in achieving fresh, vibrant hair. At Moo & Yoo, we’re committed to providing sustainable and vegan hair care solutions that not only tackle greasy roots, and many other hair concerns, but promote overall hair health.

What Are Greasy Roots?

Greasy roots occur when your sebaceous glands are overactive and are producing an excess of sebum. Despite sebum being a natural oil essential for keeping your hair hydrated and healthy, when sebum is overproduced, it can lead to that familiar greasy appearance. This can be particularly frustrating, as it can make your hair look unwashed and heavy.

What Causes Greasy Roots?

The causes of greasy roots can vary, ranging from hormonal imbalances and genetics to external factors such as over-washing or using the wrong products on your hair. When your hair is stripped of its natural oils too frequently, it can compensate by producing even more oil, heightening the problem. Additionally, certain shampoo and conditioners can begin to build up on your scalp, causing greasy roots.

How to Fix Greasy Roots

Here’s some tips to help you manage and defeat greasy roots:
  1. Wash Less Frequently: Reduce the frequency of your hair washes to every 2-3 days. This allows your scalp to regulate its oil production naturally.
  2. Don’t Touch: I know it’s easier said than done however your hair can become greasy because your keep running your hands through it. Your hands also contain natural oils, and these can be transferred to your hair when you touch it. So, try your hardest to keep your hands off and you’ll notice a big difference.
  3. Condition Wisely: Applying conditioner to your roots, especially if you have thin hair, can cause your hair to be weighed down and look greasy. Try only conditioning mid-length to ends with our lightweight Miracle Conditioner to hydrate without contributing to greasiness.
  4. Choosing the Correct Shampoo: Some shampoos are harsh to your scalp and can strip away all the natural oils in your hair. Try opting for a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo like our Miracle Shampoo, formulated to gently cleanse without stripping away any of your hair’s essential oils.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all products are completely rinsed out to prevent residue build-up on your scalp.
  6. Clean your Brush: Your hairbrush can be a hub for oils, dirt, and styling products which can make your hair dirty immediately after washing it. Try using a shampoo or gentle soap to remove any build-up on your brush and remember to remove all the loose hair stuck in there too!
