When it comes to haircare, there is no shortage of advice out there – but unfortunately not all of it is true. Over the years, there has been many myths circulating, leading many of us to follow routines and habits that are actually causing harm to our hair.
At Moo & Yoo, we believe in being transparent with you and offering you honest, simple advice to help you care for your hair in the best way possible. So, here are 10 common hair myths you need to stop believing:
1. Cutting your hair makes it grow faster.
Hair growth happens at the scalp, not the ends. Regular trims will help prevent split ends and breakage, making your hair healthier, but they do not speed up hair growth.
2. Plucking a grey hair causes more to grow.
Plucking one grey hair does not cause more to appear. Each hair follicle grows a single strand. However, repeated plucking can damage the follicle, which may affect hair growth over time.
3. Switching shampoos makes your hair healthier.
Hair does not “get used” to products. If you feel your favourite shampoo is not working as well, it could be due to changes in your hair’s needs, not because the product has stopped working.
4. You can fix split ends.
No product can repair split ends they can only prevent them. The only permanent fix is a trim.
5. Cold water makes your hair shinier.
A cold rinse can make your hair appear shinier. However, real shine comes from healthy, hydrated hair – something achieved through the right routine and products.
6. The more shampoo you use, the cleaner your hair will be.
Using too much shampoo can actually dry out your scalp and hair. We recommend that you double shampoo your hair but anything more can remove your hair’s essential oils.
7. You should brush your hair 100 strokes a day.
Overbrushing can cause damage and breakage. Gentle detangling is good, but there is no need to count strokes.
8. Dandruff is caused by a dry scalp.
Dandruff is often caused by an overgrowth of yeast or an oily scalp, not dryness. In some cases, moisturising too much can actually worsen dandruff rather than help it.
9. Hair oils are only for dry hair.
Hair oils can benefit all hair types, not just dry hair. Lightweight oils can help smooth frizz, add shine, and protect hair without weighing it down.
10. Air-drying is always better than blow-drying.
While harsh heat styling can damage hair, letting hair stay wet for long periods can also cause damage. Gentle blow-drying with a heat protectant can sometimes be a healthier choice, especially in colder months.
Good hair care starts with good knowledge. By saying goodbye to these myths, you can start giving your hair exactly what it needs to thrive.
