Plastic Free July is more than just a month-long challenge; it’s a global movement encouraging people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution. At Moo & Yoo, this message is close to our hearts. As a family-run, B Corp-certified business, we know how damaging single-use plastics are for the environment, and we are proud to do our bit to reduce plastic waste, both in our own lives and through the products we create.

The Plastic Problem

Every year, over 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally, and half of that is designed to be used just once. Shockingly, only 9% of plastic ever made has been recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators, or worse polluting our oceans and harming wildlife.

Microplastics have now been found in our food, water, and even the air we breathe. Plastic pollution isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s a health one too.

But here’s the good news: small swaps really do add up.

How Moo & Yoo Reduces Plastic Waste

Our journey began with our co-founder, Suzie, who spent years working as a salon owner and stylist. She became increasingly frustrated by the vast amount of plastic waste she saw every day; bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and styling products being emptied and thrown away with no sustainable alternative in sight. The beauty industry was overflowing with single-use plastic, and that’s when Moo & Yoo was born.

From the very start, we committed to doing things differently. We set out to create salon-quality hair and body care that was not only gentle and effective but also kind to the planet. That’s why our products are packaged in glass bottles and jars, with aluminium lids and reusable pumps. We encourage our customers to buy one pump and reuse it with future purchases, cutting down on unnecessary plastic waste.

Our outer packaging is completely plastic-free too, made using cardboard and kraft paper, and our labels are sprayed directly onto the glass—avoiding the need for plastic stickers or glue. Every decision we make is rooted in our belief that beauty should never come at the cost of the planet.

Easy Ways to Be More Plastic Free

You do not need to be perfect to make a difference. Progress over perfection is key. Here are a few simple swaps you can make today:

• Invest in a reusable water bottle – Stainless steel or glass options are long-lasting and help you avoid buying plastic bottles on the go.
• Use reusable shopping bags – Keep one in your handbag or car so you're never caught out at the checkout.
• Switch to shampoo and conditioner in refillable bottles – Like our Harmony, Radiance, or Elixir Bundles, all available in sustainable glass packaging.
• Ditch plastic razors – Choose a safety razor or brands that offer recyclable blade cartridges.
• Try a bamboo toothbrush – A simple swap that makes a big difference over time.
