Type 3B Hair: What It Is, How To Care For It and What Products To Use

Type 3B Hair: What It Is, How To Care For It and What Products To Use

Looking to discover which hair type you have? This blog is for you! Do you have bouncy, well-defined curls? Then welcome to the world of type 3B hair. Type 3B hair is a medium curl type known for its voluminous, springy, defined loops. However, like all curly hair types, it comes with its own set of challenges, particularly frizz, dryness, and potential damage. Whether you’re familiar with you curl type or just figuring it out, we’ve got the ultimate guide on how to identify, care for and maintain your fabulous curls

How to Identify Your Type 3B Hair

  1. Curl Pattern: Your curls are a medium-sized curl, bigger that those of type 3C hair but tighter that 3A curls. They form loops with a noticeable bounce.
  2. Frizz: Frizz is a common issue for those with type 3B hair, which can be heightened in humid conditions.
  3. Dryness: Curls have a harder time retaining moisture because natural oils from the scalp can’t travel down the hair shaft as easily due to the curls. This can lead to dryness, split ends, and breakage.
If these characteristics sound familiar, then it’s likely you have type 3B hair. If you are still unsure, try our Hair Quiz. This quiz allows you to discover your hair type with some simple questions and offers you a range of hair care products designed to care for your specific hair type.

Caring for you Type 3B Hair

Now we have identified your hair type, let’s jump into some ways you can care for it. The key to managing type 3B hair is keeping it moisturised and strong while being able to maintain frizz and damage.
  1. Hydration
Due to type 3B hair being prone to dryness, keeping your curls moisturised and hydrated should be your top priority. Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner that are designed not to strip your hair of its natural oils.
  1. Deep Condition Regularly
Treat your hair to a deep condition at least once a week. A rich conditioner or mask will help strengthen your hair and combat split-ends, whilst also adding much-needed hydration, resulting in less frizz.
  1. Frizz Control
To help keep your frizz at bay, avoid using a towel to dry your hair. Instead, try using a microfibre towel or even an old t-shirt. These materials cause less friction, which in turn leads to less frizz.
  1. Styling with Care
When styling, use hydrating, curl-defining products to give moisture and definition to your curls without weighing them down. Apply your products to wet/damp hair, gently scrunch, and either air dry or diffuse for best results.
  1. Heat
When possible, avoid using heat on your curls. Heat can cause your curls to lose their natural shape and become dry or brittle. Excessive heat can weaken your hair structure, leading to split ends, frizz and even permanent damage to your curl pattern. If you must use heat, always apply a heat protectant.
  1. Regular Trims
Curly hair can be more prone to split ends and breakage, so it’s important to schedule regular trims. It is recommended that you get a trim every 6-8 weeks.
